This Month: What is Bandwidth
Welcome to B-Comp Tech-Talk: a monthly blog series that explains technical jargon in simple terms. Last month we focused on the definition of a Barracuda Spam Firewall. This month we will explain bandwidth.
Bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be sent across a network or internet connection over a certain timeframe. The higher the bandwidth connection, the greater the amount of data can be delivered through that connection. For example, if you are trying to download a very large file on a computer network that has a bandwidth of only 60 Mbps (megabits) while other people in the network are also streaming videos, it may take an extremely long time (several hours) for all of the users to get the information they need. Lower bandwidth, as it applies to a business situation, can lead to low productivity and inefficiencies during the workday.
There are different units of bandwidth: megabits, megabytes, kilobytes, gigabytes, terabyte, and so on. In order to determine the right amount of bandwidth for your company, you need to:
- Assess your current business requirements (email, large file downloads, web conferencing, etc.)
- Determine what software platforms you need to run
- Take into consideration the size of your workforce
- Decide if you will use cloud-based operations
- Determine what amount of budget you can spend
- Assess how much internet your business currently uses
- Plan for future growth or downsizing (scalability)
